If you parent a teenager, there is a reasonable chance that AI is already part of their digital life, even when nobody at home calls it “AI.”
Pew Research Center reported in late 2025 that 64% of surveyed US teens said they used AI chatbots. In a related parent survey, 51% of parents said their teen used a chatbot. The gap does not prove dishonesty; it is a reason to replace guesswork with ordinary family conversation.
AI is a broad set of technologies rather than one experience, and there is no validated universal age at which a child becomes “AI-ready.” The product, purpose, account rules, data practices, child’s development, adult involvement, and family context all matter.
The stages below are conversation prompts, not a readiness test or a recommendation to introduce a chatbot. Children of the same age can need very different levels of support, and a product’s current age and supervised-account rules still apply.
Before We Start: What Do We Actually Mean by "AI"?
This question matters because many products children encounter use automated systems in the background.
The YouTube algorithm that queues up the next video. The autocomplete on a keyboard. Siri. Alexa. Netflix recommendations. Facial recognition on a phone. These are all AI, quietly running in the background of family life.
In this guide, “AI readiness” means conversational tools that children can type or speak to and that answer in human-like language. A confident, social-sounding response can still be inaccurate, inappropriate, commercially influenced, or generated without understanding. That makes adult oversight, privacy checks, and verification especially important.
Young Children: Explore Only With a Grown-Up
Young children may treat responsive technology as if it knows, wants, or feels things. A conversational system can blur the distinction because it replies in social, human-like language.
That response is not a character flaw. It is one reason to keep any exploration concrete, brief, and shared with a grown-up, and to avoid treating a chatbot as a person, confidant, teacher, or source of truth.
Independent use of a general-purpose chatbot is a poor fit for a young child. If a family chooses a shared demonstration, a grown-up can stay beside the child, avoid personal information, check the answer, and say: “That is a computer program, not a person. It does not have feelings, and it can be wrong.”
The aim is simple, honest framing, not early adoption and not proof of AI literacy.
Later Primary Years: Build Guardrails Before Access
Some primary-school children can begin to understand that AI tools are made by people, can be wrong, and produce answers by finding patterns rather than thinking or caring like a person. Understanding varies widely, so test the idea in conversation instead of assuming readiness from an age.
If a product’s rules permit child use and a family chooses to try it, keep the task structured and supervised. For example, compare one generated story idea with ideas the child created, then check a factual answer against a trusted source. The point is to keep the child thinking, not to claim that the tool builds a skill.
Unsupervised access to a general-purpose chatbot is a poor fit for this age. Product age rules and family-account options change, so check the tool’s current terms instead of relying on an old age number. Content filters and confident-sounding answers can still fail.
If you explore, sit with your child. Look at the answer together and ask what seems right, what seems off, and how you could check: “Is that actually true? How would we find out?” Verification is a useful habit across AI, social media, search, and the wider internet.
If your child wants access for schoolwork, start with the school’s rules and the product’s current child-account terms. A child-focused label is not proof of effective moderation or safe data practices.
Early Adolescence: Real Use, Real Conversations
Children in this age group may encounter AI through schoolwork, friends, search, creative tools, or features built into products they already use. Ask about those encounters before deciding that “AI use” means one particular chatbot.
Emotional use deserves special attention. AI companions can imitate closeness without the judgment, responsibility, or safeguarding of a human relationship. UNICEF’s child-rights analysis of AI companions highlights risks around dependency, manipulation, privacy, and inappropriate responses. A child should know that a chatbot is not a friend, therapist, doctor, or emergency service.
Pew’s 2026 parent survey found that 54% of parents had talked with their teen about interacting with chatbots. Ask what your child uses, inspect one response together, and discuss anything inaccurate, upsetting, or unusually personal.
Older Teens: More Autonomy, With Eyes Open
Older teenagers may use AI for schoolwork, research, creating, coding, or exploring ideas. The useful question becomes less “are you allowed to use AI?” and more “what is it doing in this task, what information did you share, and how will you verify the output?”
Emotional use still needs a firmer boundary. A general-purpose chatbot should not be treated as mental-health care or a crisis service. Keep routes to trusted adults and qualified support visible, and make it safe for a teenager to tell you about a strange or upsetting AI interaction.
Rules may still be necessary, but a rule alone does not create understanding or guarantee that access stops elsewhere. Keep a family culture in which a teenager can mention a strange or upsetting interaction without expecting shame or panic.
What to Look for in Any AI Tool for Children
Regardless of age, a few questions are worth asking before any child uses an AI tool:
Was it designed and governed for children? A child-focused label is not enough. Check the current age rule, supervised-account model, moderation limits, commercial incentives, reporting path, and whether the tool encourages social or emotional dependency.
What does it do with personal data? Check whether prompts are retained, reviewed, used for training, shared, or deletable; settings vary by product and account. Teach children not to enter names, school details, addresses, images, health information, secrets, or anything they would not want copied.
Does it leave the child doing the thinking? Ask what the child contributes, what must be checked, and whether the task still makes sense without generated output. A reflective interface does not prove learning, and a completed output does not show that knowledge or skill transferred.
How does it position relationships? A role-play feature and an AI companion are not the same product, but neither can replace the judgment, responsibility, consent, or safeguarding of a human relationship. Be cautious when a tool encourages secrecy, dependency, or emotional exclusivity.
The Bigger Picture
It is easy to read emerging evidence about AI and children and feel alarmed. The honest answer is that long-term evidence about conversational AI in childhood remains limited, and the two Pew surveys above are informative snapshots rather than a readiness standard.
What adults can do now is stay involved, model verification, protect personal information, and keep human help easy to reach. You do not need technical expertise; you need enough involvement to ask what was shared, check important answers, and help your child reach a person when needed.
